Navigating May

“The world’s favorite season is spring. All things seem possible in May.”  Edwin Way Teale

I hope all of you are safe and carrying on during this unprecedented time. Barbara and I have been taking advantage of this unexpected free time and walking everywhere throughout the valley and beyond. Wherever we go there is the ever present roar of water- snow melt, spring rains, surface runoff that course throughout the valley to find it’s destination in the Mad River. There are obstacles along the way- fallen trees, eroded banks, nature’s congestion at every bend and turn, yet the water finds a way to navigate over, under, around and through to continue its purposeful path. There have been a lot of obstacles thrown at us these last few months but collectively we will find a way to navigate through them.

The Warren Store and the Mad River Valley lost a truly one of a kind character in Ray Kowalski. Ray worked at the store for almost 24 years. He was precise, purposeful, and as reliable a person that you would ever want to have. His Far Side humor was hysterical. Ray didn’t suffer fools- he could assess a person or situation and be spot on. He was proud of his domain at the register. Being the iconic curiosity that he was I put up a sign over his station” 10 words or less”! Over the years that restriction eased up considerably with Ray. He was a stickler for doing things right- he was the personification of practical. We’ll miss our dear friend and colleague- he was a real trip but he was our trip. The Warren Store has always prided ourselves in having an eclectic cast of characters. Ray stands out as truly one of the most memorable.  We love Ray and we will miss him .When life returns to the new normal we’ll have a celebration for Ray at the store and yes there will be Crane Lake Merlot to toast him.

We’ll continue our special weekly wine offerings for curbside pickup every Thursday and beginning on Tuesday May 5th ( Cinco de Mayo!) we’ll be offering grab and go meals from our deli and cookies and brownies from our bakery on Tuesday through Friday. Check out our website(warrenstore.com) for our wine and food  offerings and how to order.

“Better to be busy than to be busy worrying.” Angela Lansbury

Lori here, reporting from home like so many of you! My mind is continually boggled by the scope of this situation! When I try to think of the whole world doing this it’s like trying to imagine infinity or the universe! Just too big! I have a whole new appreciation for jigsaw puzzles and how to buy them for the store. I am hoping that you will all have the opportunity to see the beautiful things I have bought for spring and summer and sooner rather than later. What will the “New Normal” be? I know we are all questioning this and we can only wait and see! I am grateful for the evidence all around us of the greatness of the human spirit and how most of us come together in times of dire need. I am hopeful that we will learn lessons from this that will help make our world a better place and we will all be stronger and smarter as a result.

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I can’t help thinking of the cards and gifts Upstairs that you would all be buying if you could. Perhaps we can have an alternate Mother’s Day when we can reopen? Perhaps you can order Warren Store Gift Cards for those special women in your lives? We will get through this!

We can’t wait  to see you. When we do open in all likelihood our hours will be abbreviated temporarily and there will be limits to the number of people in the store. We will continue to make your visit a memorable and safe one. We’ll keep you updated on our progress and plans through our website, Facebook, and Instagram. Reach out to me at jack @warrenstore. com if you have any questions.

This month’s “under our noses” shout-out goes to a beautiful stretch of country road in Moretown Common. Ride up that steep hill after The Moretown Store and take your immediate left turn. Drive a mile or so and park. The road offers spectacular panoramas of the Green Mountain chain, beautiful expansive meadows, old barns, and yes plenty of running water coursing it’s way purposefully toward it’s destination.

“You may not always have a comfortable life. And you will not always be able to solve all the world’s problems all at once. But don’t underestimate the impact you can have, because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of it’s own.”
 Michelle Obama
