Active August

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, like the highest seat in a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The first week of August is motionless and hot.”   –  Natalie Babbit

There is something about August that straightens us up and we re-evaluate our summer strategy- school shopping for the kids, Labor Day plans, one more camping trip, and lots of “where did the summer go?”

August is certainly the grand finale – the very end of a fireworks display where everything but the kitchen sink is thrown at you! There is so much to see and do that the happenings in August could easily be liberally sprinkled throughout the rest of the year! It all starts in The Valley with the Festival of the Arts, a juggernaut of painting, prose, and parties throughout the month.

At the Warren Store we’ll be jumping into this midsummer madness as well!

Monday, August 6th– Pizza making for kids in our bakery at 4pm ($12. per child).

Thursday, August 9th – Lawsons’ Finest beer tasting from 3-5. Free!

Saturday, August 11th– our almost world famous pie eating contest for kids of all ages at 1pm. Free!

Sunday, August 12th – the Warren Store will provide the desserts for the signature Festival of the Arts fund raising event, Ocean to the Mountains lobster bake.

Wednesday, August 15th   – at 6pm we take the Warren Store wine tasting event on the road and partner up with our friends at the Taste Place. Join us for some incredible Vermont cheeses and charcuterie paired up with wines from Vermont and beyond. Seating is limited to 35 people so reserve your spot at the Taste Place $40 pp.

We are delighted to announce that we have a new neighbor in our midst! Tonewood maple syrup will be renting a space in our back building to pack and ship their beautifully packaged and locally sourced maple syrup and maple products. We will carry all their products in the store and there will be tastings and product collaborations in the future. Welcome Dori!

Upstairs the theme for August is “out with the old in with the new!” All spring and summer clothing is presently 20-50% off to make room for the new fall merchandise as it arrives. There’s plenty of good stuff for wearing right now and it’s all on sale! The toy room is well stocked with everything from butterfly nets and bouncy balls to car games and sidewalk chalk. Lots of great jigsaw puzzles for all ages to while away a possibly rainy summer day.

We’ve just received a large order of Hobo leather bags and wallets and a very strategic furniture rearrangement has them beautifully displayed. Thank you Pam!

We sadly say goodbye to Lisa Schermerhorn who did a great job but very happily welcome Patty Kaufman to take her place! Patty comes with impressive retail experience from her years of managing The Limited in Burlington. We are lucky to have her join our sales team!

Given the fun frenzy that is August, I have two “right under our noses” picks for this month.

The Ocean to Mountain lobster bake on Sunday August 12th is the community’s opportunity to participate in a great party and support the Festival of the Arts and all of the tireless volunteers that make this “top 10 event in Vermont” work.

Bridge Street. Swimming during the day at the covered bridge. Wonderful shops. Music, food trucks, and friends on Wednesday nights. It’s all good but go to Bridge Street late at night when it’s quiet and everything is closed. There’s nothing like it. And grab a creamee over at the VG if they’re still open. A simple slice of life but a delicious one!

“A summer night is like perfection of thought”. Thank you Wallace Stevens!

To the best customers in the world!
