August in the Valley

“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.” Natalie Babbitt from Tuck Everlasting

High season. Hot. The bounty of our gardening hours coming into fruition. And that ever so slight chill in the evening air that we all know is a harbinger for our next glorious season. August is summer at its best. It’s no surprise that the month of August provides us with more activities and events than any other.

Wayne Cochran said – “Sometimes I wonder what I’m a gonna do cause there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.”

Apparently Wayne has never been to Vermont or the Mad River Valley!

We are delighted to be part of the Festival of the Arts and in true August fashion we are hosting a variety of events for kids of all ages!

Thursday, August 8th from 3-5pm – We have Brett Seymour from Collaborative Brewery – right here in Waitsfield – to sample his beer.

Saturday, August 10th at 1:30pm – Our iconic pie eating contest. Kids of all ages welcome.

Monday, August 12th at 4pm – Our bakery will be conducting a cupcake decorating workshop for kids 7 and up.Limit to 10 kids and cost is $10 per child. Sign up at the store.

On Saturday August 17th from 12-3pm – Join us to learn everything you needed to know about CBD from Luce Family Farm. We’ll have a variety of CBD products available for sale and sample.

Our Lobster Roll Wednesday will continue throughout the month. What’s a summer without trying this tasty crustacean!

Our friends at the Pitcher Inn will be hosting Sunday brunch throughout August from 10am until 1pm. Stop by and try Chef Jacob’s classic and innovative offerings. Reservations recommended.
One of my favorite value wines is from Aviary Vineyards called Alias. This month we’ll be selling their Cabernet, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir for $8.95 a bottle. These wines are well made and provide a great option for larger parties and gatherings.

Upstairs, the word for August is SALE! All spring summer 2019 clothing for men and women is 30% off! There’s still  a lot of great stuff from all your favorite brands in all sizes. New fall merchandise is arriving and we need room to put it out on the floor! The toy room is full to bursting with all kinds of fun, summertime activities for kids of all ages. Puzzles, games, puppets, cars, trucks, yo-yos and so much more. Our new tanks and tee shirts from Wander on Words are amazing! Our store logo, beer breweries and bike trails from the entire state of Vermont have all been wildly popular. As always, free gift wrapping and we can ship!
This month’s “under our noses” selection is the entire Valley. Yes I chose this last year as well but try going anywhere in The Valley in August and not run into a paintbrush, a food sample, a taste of beer, a performance, or fresh produce! Between the Round Up on Wednesday, the farmer’s market on Saturday, the full calendar of events for the Festival of the Arts and the Taste Place and the fact that we are one of the best playgrounds on the planet, The Valley is the place to be to put an exclamation point on your summer.

“Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.”   Sam Keen

However you choose to spend your August days in this special place is a good decision- enjoy!  –  Jack
