Not So Lazy August

“August brings into sharp focus and a furious boil everything I’ve been listening to in the late spring and summer.”
-Henry Rollins

The always talented, always intense Henry Rollins is spot on. August brings all that we love about summer to a wonderful crescendo. There are innumerable events and activities, some of the year’s warmest days, and the natural world becomes hyperactive. Perseid meteor showers, fisher cats on the prowl to add winter weight, and that slow but perceptible change of green, from glossy to muted. August is certainly the month where we all want to cash in and check off our wish list of summer activities. Lazy days of August. Perhaps. But this month is also a restless month as the days get shorter and we suddenly find ourselves looking for a sweatshirt at both ends of the day. Time to get busy and relax!

Certainly one of the great simple pleasures of summer in the Mad River Valley is the river! What summer would be complete without a plunge at your favorite swimming hole. Check out the nice piece that Chronicle put together about Vermont swimming holes, particularly in the Mad River Valley, on the news section of our webpage, HERE. We’re very fortunate to have so many refreshing swimming options available to us.

We were delighted to hear that the Warren Store, and our good friends at Kenyon’s, were selected in Yelp’s 100 Challenge. One hundred businesses from around the country are picked and cited for their reviews. Thanks to all of you out there for making it happen!

In keeping with this crazy month we have a host of events at the store that will appeal to everyone!

Our deli and bakery will be participating at the Taste of the Valley on Sunday August 7th starting at 5pm. Plenty of tickets available for the big fundraiser to sustain the Festival of the Arts.

Our bakery will be hosting a pizza making class for the first 10 kids that sign up on Monday August 8th at 4:30. There is a small fee.

Our summer classic, the pie eating contest, will happen outside the Warren Store on Saturday, August 13th at 1:30. No charge and for kids of all ages! I think I’m in this year!

We’re very excited about a new brewery over in Bristol, Hogback Mountain. We’ll be having a tasting of their fine brews on Saturday August 20th from 1-4. We’ll be sampling out this great new smoked fish and a calamari dip as well.

On Saturday August 27th our guy Jake and his friends will be playing up on the porch from 1-3.

On Friday, September 2nd the Green Mountain Stage Race will be doing their first stage, the time trial, right at the gazebo. Labor Day Weekend you can count on some fantastic clothing and house are bargains from Saturday through Monday.

We’re always adding more events so check out our events page on our website. We can’t keep up with ourselves!

This month’s “under our noses” choice is, no surprise, the Festival of the Arts. Every day throughout August there’s a variety of events, mostly free, that entertain and engage all ages. Special thanks to Rebecca, her staff, and all of the participants who make this “more than a month long event” such a success. And don’t forget the Blueberry Jamboree at Hartshorn’s Farm on Saturday August 6th!

“August is like the Sunday of summer”.
Time to play, relax, and enjoy that this time of year and what this valley has to offer. It really doesn’t get much better!

To the best customers in the world!

Two good friends, Richie Grossman and Robin Bennett, passed away early this week. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their friends and family.
